BERKELEY — Members of Forecast the Facts are asking Nate Silver to fire Roger Pielke, Jr., who is in hot water after the Huffington Post revealed today that he threatened Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, and Dr. Kevin Trenberth, a distinguished senior climate scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, over their criticism’s of his first post on Silver’s FiveThirtyEight.com. (1)
“Pielke has a record of confusing the facts on climate change, all while impugning the character of climate scientists who are dedicated to bringing to the world the information we need to make informed decisions on what to do about the climate crisis,” said Brant Olson, campaign director at Forecast the Facts. “Nate Silver has all the information he needs to show Pielke the door.”
Pielke seems to have been angered by Mann and Trenberth’s criticisms of his first post on FiveThirtyEight, which erroneously claimed that there is no link between the rising costs of climate disasters and extreme weather fueled by climate change.
Not only are these links well documented, they have been repeatedly validated by all of the authoritative science institutions studying climate change. Just two weeks the world’s largest general scientific body, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, re-confirmed that climate change is affecting droughts, flood and storms. (1)
Nate Silver conceded on last night’s “The Daily Show” that “80 percent” of the comments to Pielke’s post were negative.
The Forecast the Facts petition calling for Pielke’s removal is at http://act.forecastthefacts.org/sign/nate_silver_fire_pielke/.
